2004 Press Releases
Morton Plant Caring Partners Seeks Applications for Adult Cancer Survivors' Retreat

CLEARWATER, Fla., (August 19, 2004)---Walk by the shade of a cypress tree while admiring the wildlife, ride an old fashioned bicycle or create unique beaded works of art. Just a sampling of some of the activities adult cancer survivors can enjoy at Morton Plant Hospital Caring Partners' Camp Living Springs. Intended to provide adult cancer survivors with a respite from the treatment and survival process, the seventh annual three-day camp will be held from Friday, October 29 through Sunday, October 31, 2004. Completed applications must be received by Monday, August 30, 2004.

"The camp provides a much-needed service to adult cancer survivors in the Tampa Bay area and beyond," said Martie Henderson, president of Morton Plant Caring Partners. "At no cost to participants, Camp Living Springs is fully funded by the hospital's volunteer organization." Any adult age 18 or older and diagnosed with cancer is eligible to attend the camp.

Adult cancer survivors are treated to three days of fun, crafts, massages, dancing and entertainment. All food and accommodations are also provided free of charge. Nurses, massage therapists, counselors and Caring Partners' members donate their time to supervise and facilitate the camp experience.

"While there are several programs for children suffering from cancer, adult cancer survivors have few opportunities to escape the thoughts, emotions and daily rigors of their disease," added Henderson.

Since 1998, the camp has been held annually in the fall and for the first time in 2004 there was a spring camp. The mission of Camp Living Springs is to promote camaraderie, relaxation and shared experience with an annual goal of increasing the number of adult cancer survivors whose lives are enriched by the camp opportunity. In the first year, Morton Plant Hospital hosted 21 participating cancer survivors and in spring 2004, the number grew to 74.

Camp Living Springs is held at a 100-acre retreat facility, located around a lake and river in Ellenton, Fla. Expansive porches overlooking the lake are lined with rocking chairs, conducive to group discussions or quiet reflective time. In November 2001, Caring Partners' Camp Living Springs won the President's Daily Points of Light award sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National Service and the Knights of Columbus. This award honors organizations demonstrating an innovative approach to volunteer service. Earlier in 2001, Camp Living Springs also won the 2001 Extraordinary Program Award from the American Society for Directors of Volunteer Services.
