Morton Plant Hospital's Echocardiography Lab Receives Accreditation

CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 18, 2004)---Morton Plant Hospital's echocardiography laboratory was recently granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of the Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). The lab is one of the first thousand echocardiography labs in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be recognized for is commitment to high quality diagnostic testing and patient care. In addition, the lab was also accredited to perform adult transesophageal and two-dimensional echo studies.

Participation in the accreditation process is voluntary. Accreditation status signifies that the facility has been reviewed by an independent agency, which recognizes the lab's commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.

An echocardiogram is a noninvasive ultrasound examination of the heart that produces a moving picture. Evaluation of a person's heart valves and chambers, function and size of the heart are examples of the information provided by echo testing, which is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease. It is one of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology with an estimated 10 million performed annually in the United States.

With a transesophageal cardiac study, the view is through a probe down the esophagus, allowing a closer look at prosthetic valves and therefore affording the ability to evaluate for infection and clots. The two-dimensional echo views the heart from outside the chest wall to analyze wall motion, chamber size and valvular function.

The ICAEL was established with the support of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography (SOPE) to provide a peer review of echo labs to encourage the provision of quality diagnostic evaluation by a process of voluntary accreditation. A non-profit organization, the ICAEL is dedicated to ensuring high quality patient care and to promoting health care.

Established in 1916, Morton Plant Hospital is a 687-bed facility dedicated to improving the health of all it serves through community-owned health services that set the standard for high quality, compassionate care.

In 2002 Morton Plant was named one of America's Top 50 Hospitals, according to AARP Modern Maturity magazine and a 100 Top Hospital in the "Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success" study for the fifth consecutive year in 2003. Morton Plant Hospital is located at 300 Pinellas Street, Clearwater, Fla., 727-462-7000.
