Morton Plant Mease Health Care Receives National Quality Award

CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 17, 2004)---Morton Plant Mease Health Care has been recognized by Premier, one of the country's largest health care alliances, with the Premier Award for Quality. One of only seven hospitals or health systems recognized nationally, Morton Plant Mease was the only organization that received an award for processes to improve clinical quality.

"This is one of the most prestigious recognitions in the world of health care and we couldn't be more excited," said Philip K. Beauchamp, president and chief executive officer of Morton Plant Mease Health Care. "Quality in our clinical care is a number one priority for us."

Morton Plant Mease received the award for a method called Clinical Process Improvement Team (CPIT), a multi-disciplinary approach it developed to improve the clinical care of patients. Teams of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other clinical professionals were formed to review specific diagnostic classifications. "All steps in the care of a patient from admission to discharge are studied to identify opportunities for improvement," said Beauchamp.

More importantly, care plans were monitored for implementation. "For the process to be effective over a long period of time, success must be more than a set of recommendations - it must mean actually putting those recommendations into use on a daily basis," said Beauchamp. "With participation across many disciplines of health care, we have been able to create a streamlined process that meets the needs of our patient population and continually focuses on improvement. No matter how good you are at something, you can always do it better."

The clinical quality improvement award is given by Premier to recognize a hospital that has made substantial efforts to improve clinical quality in any area of the hospital. The Morton Plant Mease award was judged by a panel from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement based on applications submitted by 44 hospitals across the nation.

The judges included Maureen Bisognano (Institute for Healthcare Improvement); Michael Millenson, author, Demanding Medical Excellence: Doctors and Accountability in the Information Age; Eugene Nelson, D.Sc., M.P.H. (Dartmouth Medical School); and Michael Pugh (Pugh Ettinger McCarthy Associates, L.L.C.). Premier announced the winners of the Award for Quality at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 11 in Las Vegas at Premier's national conference: Breakthroughs in Performance Improvement.
