Influenza---or the flu is a contagious disease caused by a virus that can lead to pneumonia. Flu symptoms include: fever, runny nose, chills, weaknesses, coughing, body aches and a sore throat. Each year influenza vaccines are produced to protect against the most virulent strains. According to the Centers for Disease Control, this year the vaccine contains A/New Caledonia/20/99-like (H1N1), A/Moscow/10/99-like (A/Panama/2007/99) and B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like viruses.
Pneumonia causes an estimated 40,000 deaths annually in the United States, accounting for more deaths than any vaccine-preventable bacterial disease. About half of these deaths could be prevented through vaccination.
