2012 Press Releases
Registration Open For Third Annual Morton Plant Mease Prostate Cancer Awareness Race

Event to Feature New 10K and Miracle Mile Races

CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 24, 2012) – Featuring two new races, registration is now open for the third annual Morton Plant Mease Foundation’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Race scheduled for September 8, 2012, in Clearwater, Fla.

The family-friendly event is presented by Urology Specialists of West Florida, and benefits Morton Plant Mease community screenings and education services and assists prostate cancer patients who may not have the resources for treatment.

Along with a 5K (3.1 miles), the event has added a 10K (6.2 miles) and a Miracle Mile (1-mile walk/run). There will also be a Kids Dash.

The 5K and 10K will kick off at 7:30 a.m. on the Morton Plant Hospital campus. Both courses will take runners through surrounding waterfront neighborhoods.

The event hopes to build on last year’s successful event that attracted more than 600 participants, including a number of prostate cancer survivors.

Participants can register by online by visiting and going to the events tab. The registration fees are:

  • 10K and 5K: $25 until Aug. 31 and $30 after Sept. 1.
  • Miracle Mile: $15 through Aug. 31 and $20 after Sept. 1
  • Kids Dash: $10 through Sept. 7.

Late registrations are available on the day of the race for an additional $5 fee.

The race is part of Morton Plant Mease’s recognition of September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Other events will include screenings and lectures.

“Our hope is that through this race, and other awareness events, people learn that early detection is vital,” said Scott Klavans, MD, chair of the Morton Plant Mease Prostate Cancer Awareness Race planning committee. “There is up to a 40 percent decrease in the death rate if caught early through screenings. And with the advanced treatments available, prostate cancer patients can experience a good recovery and a full and active life.”

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men, and one out of every six males will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime.

The hospitals of Morton Plant Mease offer prostate cancer patients the most advanced treatment options available to combat the disease, including robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomies and ultrasound-guided seed implantation. Additional treatment options include traditional surgery to remove the prostate gland, external beam radiation therapy and hormone therapy. A variety of support groups and services are also available to all cancer patients and their families to help them cope with the impact of cancer on their daily lives.
