Morton Plant Mease Triathlon Offers Athletes Triple Bridge Challenge

Registration Open for the Race’s Seventh Year                                          

CLEARWATER, Fla., (May 17, 2012) – A trifecta of bridges will again be the highlight of the seventh annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon. Registration is now open for the sprint distance triathlon which is scheduled for Sunday, June 24, 6:50 a.m., 1060 Gulf Blvd., Clearwater, Florida.

Starting and ending at Sand Key Park, the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon takes triathletes on a 1/3-mile open water swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a 13-mile bike over the Sand Key, Memorial Causeway and Belleair Causeway bridges and 3.1 mile run finishing in Sand Key Park. The Morton Plant Mease Triathlon is the one of a few local triathlons incorporating three bridges into a route for a more challenging race.

Individual athletes and relay teams may register for the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon at: www.active.com. Registration fees are $75 for individual competitors and $90 for relay teams. Registration fees will increase to $80 for individuals and $100 for relay teams on June 1, 2012. The race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT) and a portion of the proceeds benefit the pediatric services at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease.

The 2012 USAT Florida Regional Junior Championship is held within the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon and junior athletes, ages 16 to 19, will compete for the title and for bragging rights as the fastest junior in the region. This race also gives USAT a chance to identify potential future Olympians.

Custom awards are presented to the top five finishers in the following categories: 14 years and younger; 15 – 19; 20 – 24 and upward in five-year increments to 85 years, 85 and older; Clydesdale; Athena; Novice; and physically challenged. All race finishers receive custom medals.
