CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 10, 2003)---Morton Plant Hospital was recently named the official team hospital for the Tampa Bay Storm Arena Football team, and David Paul Thompson, M.D., has been appointed as the official team physician.
"Morton Plant Hospital has had a long tradition of protecting the health and safety of the county's student athletes with the athletic trainer program," said Dr. Thompson, who also serves as the medical director of Morton Plant Hospital's Sports Medicine Center. "Becoming the official hospital and physician of a professional team will help to expand the services of our sports medicine department. This partnership with the Tampa Bay Storm is a win-win situation for everyone involved, especially the athletes and their families."
As the Storm's team physician, Dr. Thompson will be responsible for overseeing the health and wellness of the players, as well as focusing on joint and bone care. He was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Morton Plant Hospital's Sports Medicine Center provides treatment for orthopaedics, such as knee arthoscopic surgery and rehabilitation following a sports injury. The Center will be housed in the new Orthopaedic and Neurosciences Pavilion once construction is completed, which is estimated to be by May 2004.
