Morton Plant Hospital Becomes Tampa Bay Storm's Team Hospital
01/06/2005

CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 10, 2003)---Morton Plant Hospital was recently named the official team hospital for the Tampa Bay Storm Arena Football team, and David Paul Thompson, M.D., has been appointed as the official team physician.

"Morton Plant Hospital has had a long tradition of protecting the health and safety of the county's student athletes with the athletic trainer program," said Dr. Thompson, who also serves as the medical director of Morton Plant Hospital's Sports Medicine Center. "Becoming the official hospital and physician of a professional team will help to expand the services of our sports medicine department. This partnership with the Tampa Bay Storm is a win-win situation for everyone involved, especially the athletes and their families."

As the Storm's team physician, Dr. Thompson will be responsible for overseeing the health and wellness of the players, as well as focusing on joint and bone care. He was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Morton Plant Hospital's Sports Medicine Center provides treatment for orthopaedics, such as knee arthoscopic surgery and rehabilitation following a sports injury. The Center will be housed in the new Orthopaedic and Neurosciences Pavilion once construction is completed, which is estimated to be by May 2004.

Established in 1916, Morton Plant Hospital is a 687-bed facility dedicated to improving the health of all it serves through community-owned health services that set the standard for high quality, compassionate care. In 2002, Morton Plant was named one of America's Top 50 Hospitals, according to AARP Modern Maturity magazine and a 100 Top Hospital in the "Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success" study for the fourth consecutive year. In 2000, HCIA-Sachs (now Solucient) named Morton Plant as the only hospital in the country to achieve 100 Top Hospital status in four categories - cardiovascular, stroke, orthopaedic and overall. Morton Plant Hospital is located at 300 Pinellas Street, Clearwater, Fla., 727-462-7000.
