Traffic Alert for Upcoming Morton Plant Mease Triathlon

CLEARWATER, Fla., (June 1, 2010) – Approximately one thousand swimmers, cyclists and runners are expected to compete in the Fifth Annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon presented by the Skip Cline Young Leadership Society on Sunday, June 27, 2010. The competition begins at 6:50 a.m. in Sand Key Park and will run through communities in Clearwater and Belleair. Morton Plant Mease Health Care is working with city officials to notify citizens of the event and of possible travel impact during the early morning race. The following locations, bridges and streets will be impacted from approximately 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. during the triathlon: Sand Key Park - Sand Key Park - Sand Key Bridge - South Gulfview Boulevard - Hamden Drive - Coronado Drive - Memorial Causeway Bridge - Gulf Boulevard City of Clearwater - Palm Avenue - Turner Street - Bay Avenue - Druid Road West - Druid Road South - Belleview Boulevard - Indian Rocks Road City of Belleair - West Bay Drive - Belleair Causeway Bridge The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department as well as police officers from the cities of Clearwater and Belleair will be directing traffic during the event. The Morton Plant Mease Triathlon begins with a 1/3-mile open water swim at Sand Key Park, 1040 Gulf Boulevard, Clearwater, Fla. From there, participants will bike 13 miles through Clearwater Beach, over the Memorial Causeway and through Clearwater by way of Druid Road and Indian Rocks Road, then over the Belleair Beach Causeway and north on Gulf Boulevard. The final leg consists of a 3.1 mile run in Sand Key Park. The registration fee is $75 per individual and $95 per relay team. Entry fees are non-refundable. Online registration closes on June 22 and no registration will be offered on day of race. Registration capacity is limited to 1000 entries. A $4,000 purse will be distributed to the top five Elite/Open Division male and female finishers. Custom plaques will be awarded to the top five male and female in each division and top three teams in each relay division. All race finishers will receive a custom medal. Divisions are as follows: - Age Group (14 and under, then in five year increments to 85+) - Clydesdale: 39 and under/40 and over - Athena: 39 and under/40 and over - Novice - Skip Cline Young Leadership Society member - Physically Challenged - Relay Teams (female, male, mixed). Division winners will receive a guaranteed entry and a 50 percent discount registration fee for the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg, in April 2011. The Morton Plant Mease Triathlon has also again been chosen as the 2010 USAT Florida Region Junior Championship. Proceeds from the triathlon benefit the Morton Plant Mease Foundation.
