2009 Press Releases
New Brain Tumor Support Group Hosted by Mease Dunedin Hospital
07/13/2009
DUNEDIN, Fla., (July 7, 2009) In May 2004, Robert Gibbs went to Mease Dunedin Hospital’s emergency room with troubling symptoms – suddenly he couldn’t see. Those troubling symptoms turned out to be a brain tumor and that diagnosis has sent Gibbs on a journey that has led him to create an advocacy group, Miles for Hope, for brain tumor patients. His latest project, a brain tumor support group, will have its first meeting at Mease Dunedin Hospital on Thursday, July 23, 6pm, Mease Dunedin Hospital, Meeting Room 1.

“I believe that support and hope are both key components to the healing and recovery process. This relationship between Mease Dunedin and Miles for Hope will provide a community service by supporting both the patients and the caregivers through a very difficult diagnosis,” said Gibbs.

Led by Gibbs and Morton Plant Mease Manager, Jo Simpson, the free support group is open to anyone impacted by a brain tumor diagnosis – patient or caregivers. “The group will be a forum for sharing experiences, education and improving the well-being of people with a brain tumor. Patients and their family or caregivers are welcome,” said Simpson.

For more information on the Brain Tumor Support Group, contact Patty Wells, Morton Plant Mease Neurosciences, (727) 734-6839 or Bob and Barbara Gibbs, Miles for Hope, (727) 647-6548. Starting July 23, the group will meet on the fourth Thursday of the month – July 23, August 27, September 24, October 22 and November 19 (date moved for Thanksgiving holiday).
