Morton Plant North Bay Physician Honored for Excellence|
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla., (October 9, 2008) - Zahid Akram, M.D., of Morton Plant North Bay Hospital medical staff was one of four physicians honored with Excellence in Medicine Awards for their outstanding service to Morton Plant Mease, the community, the medical profession and for contributions to medical progress.
Nominations are made by members of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation board, Morton Plant Mease Health Care board and the medical executive committees of Morton Plant Hospital, Morton Plant North Bay and Mease Hospitals. Dr. Akram earned the honor for his contributions to improving the ICU care and Respiratory Care at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital. In addition to chairing the monthly Critical Care Committee meetings, Dr. Akram has been involved in various projects, including multidisciplinary rounding, decreasing ventilator days and developing and implementing critical care and respiratory order sets. In addition, he has given numerous education presentations to ICU and respiratory team members. He also was involved in initiating a Rapid Response Team at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital. The Rapid Response Team consists of Dr. Akram and nurses from the intensive care unit specializing in critical care and early evaluation of patients. Similar to a “code blue” team, the Rapid Response Team responds within five minutes of being paged to assist bedside nurses assess and stabilize a patient’s situation. Dr. Akram is in the process of implementing a specialty of the Rapid Response Team regarding early recognition and treatment of respiratory patients.
