Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Program, Athletic Trainers Honored for Providing "Premier Internship Experience"
07/15/2008

CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 15, 2008) - The Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Program at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida has been honored with the Internship of the Year Award by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions upon the recommendation of the Department of Physical Education and Sport at Central Michigan University (CMU) in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Program received the award for its internship program offered to CMU students under the guidance of Morton Plant Mease certified athletic trainers Scott Anderson and Matthew Benson.

“Our mission to serve the community includes reaching out and educating the future of health care. We’re proud to be partnered with the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions at Central Michigan University to offer internships and guide students preparing to enter the field of sports medicine. We’re honored to receive this award and Scott and Matt are to be commended,” said Philip K. Beauchamp, F.A.C.H.E., president and chief executive officer, Morton Plant Mease Health Care.

In a letter to Morton Plant Mease, Thomas Masterson, interim dean of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions, noted that the Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Program is a “premier internship experience to Central Michigan University students” and without “the mentorship provided by Mr. Anderson and Mr. Benson, CMU would not be nationally recognized for the outstanding alumni in the field of sports medicine.”

Morton Plant Mease has provided sports medicine internships to CMU students for approximately 10 years. Anderson was presented with a plaque in honor of the award at the 2008 National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium held in St. Louis, Missouri in June.

In addition to CMU internships, the Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine program helped initiate the Pinellas County School System’s Athletic Training Program to provide complimentary physical exams for student athletes and athletic trainers on the field during school sports events.
