The Race Is On! Registration Opens for Third Annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon
02/04/2008

CLEARWATER, Fla., (February 1, 2008) - Swim, cycle and run your way to victory and good health in the third annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon. Registration for this year’s race opened at 9 a.m. EST on Friday, February 1. More than 800 individual athletes and relay teams are invited to register and compete in the triathlon benefiting the four hospitals of Morton Plant Mease Health Care; all community owned facilities dedicated to improving the health of the community.

“Whether you’re a professional triathlete or an amateur, age 18 or 81, you’re invited to sign up and take part in this year’s event. I personally competed in last year’s race and it’s a fantastic feeling crossing that finish line and knowing you’re benefiting the community by supporting the community owned hospitals of Morton Plant Mease,” said Bryan Stanley, co-chair of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation’s Skip Cline Young Leadership Society, presenters of the triathlon.

The race is sponsored by the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and sanctioned by USA Triathlon. It features a 1/3-mile open water swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a 13-mile bike over the Sand Key, Belleair Causeway and Memorial Causeway Bridges and 3.1 mile run finishing in Sand Key Park. The race kicks off at 7 a.m. on Sunday, July 13 at Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd., Clearwater, Florida.

Athletes may register for the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon by going to www.mpmtriathlon.org or www.active.com. Registration fees are as follows:

  • $65 for individual competitors
  • $75 for relay teams

A $4,000 prize purse will be divided and distributed to the top five elite male and female finishers. The 2007 Morton Plant Mease Triathlon elite winners were two Floridians – Marc Bonnet-Eymard of Winter Garden and Stephanie Liles of Tallahassee. It was Eymard’s first race competing as a professional triathlete. The oldest triathlete to compete last year was 86 and the youngest 13.

All race finishers receive custom medals. Custom plaques are also given to the top five finishers in the following categories: 14 years and younger; 15 – 19; 20 –25 and upward in five-year increments to 85 years, 85 and older; Clydesdale; Athena; Novice; Skip Cline member; and physically challenged.

Even if you’re unable to compete in the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon, you can still be a part of the event. Race volunteers are needed to assist with athlete registration, distribution of water along the race course and assisting at the finish line.
