2002 Press Releases
Morton Plant Hospital's Auxiliary Seeks Applications for Cancer Survivors' Retreat

CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 16, 2002)---Morton Plant Hospital's Auxiliary is seeking campers for its fifth annual Camp Living Springs, a three-day camp for adult cancer survivors. Intended to provide cancer patients with a respite from the treatment and survival process, the camp will be held from November 1 through November 3, 2002. Completed applications must be received by August 30, 2002.

Offered at no cost to participants, Camp Living Springs is fully funded by Morton Plant Hospital's Auxiliary. Nurses, massage therapists and counselors donate their time to supervise and facilitate the camp experience. Adult cancer survivors are treated to three days of fun, crafts, massages, dancing and entertainment. All food and accommodations are also provided free of charge.

"Camp Living Springs provides a unique concept of much-needed service to adult cancer survivors in our community," said Kim Rappolt, volunteer coordinator for Morton Plant Hospital. "Cancer camps for children are common, camps for adults are not. Outside of support groups, very little is available for adult cancer survivors who have the same needs to escape from the thoughts, emotions and daily rigors of their disease."

Since 1998, the camp has been held annually in the fall. The mission of Camp Living Springs is to promote camaraderie, relaxation and shared experience with an annual goal of increasing the number of adult cancer survivors whose lives are enriched by the camp opportunity. In the first year, Morton Plant Hospital hosted 21 participating cancer survivors and in October 2001, the number grew to 68. Any adult age 18 or older and diagnosed with cancer is eligible to attend the camp.

Camp Living Springs is held at a 100-acre retreat facility, located around a lake and river in Ellenton, Fla. Expansive porches overlooking the lake are lined with rocking chairs, conducive to group discussions or quiet reflective time.
