2007 Press Releases
New Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Clinic Provides Care, Convenience for Injured Pros or Everyday Athletes

CLEARWATER, Fla., (January 2, 2007) - The thrill of victory…and the agony of the feet, the back, or the knee. Sports injuries such as sprains, strains and the occasional tear in a muscle can be painful and sometimes require medical attention. Morton Plant Mease Health Care is making it easier for athletes of all ages and all training levels, including weekend warriors, to seek medical help by providing the Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Clinic.

“Injured athletes who come to the clinic will be treated by a multidisciplinary medical team experienced in treating sports related injuries. The team includes an on-site physician, a physical therapist and an athletic trainer who not only will treat injuries, but offer sport-specific training on how to prevent future injuries,” said Christine Weot, M.D., a Morton Plant Mease physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Sport-specific training focuses on flexibility, balance, motor control, strength and power training – all of which can reduce the risk of injury. In addition to this service, if an athlete’s injury is severe and requires a consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon, the Sports Medicine Clinic team has the ability to provide the patient with a referral to see a surgeon within a week.

“Time is of the essence when treating an orthopaedic injury,” stated David Thompson, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and medical director of sports medicine at Morton Plant Hospital. “For example, tears in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) – a ligament in the knees - are common in sports such as soccer, football and basketball. A complete ACL tear typically requires surgery and if left untreated, could lead to additional knee injuries and eventual arthritis.”

The Morton Plant Mease Sports Medicine Clinic is located in the Ptak Orthopaedic and Neuroscience Pavilion, 430 Morton Plant Street, on the campus of Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. Hours are Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are not required.

Nationally recognized for health care excellence, Morton Plant Mease Health Care is dedicated to providing community owned health care services that set the standard for high-quality, compassionate care. Morton Plant Mease Health Care is comprised of the following hospitals – Morton Plant, Clearwater; Mease Dunedin, Dunedin; Mease Countryside, Safety Harbor and Morton Plant North Bay, New Port Richey.
