MORTON PLANT HOSPITAL RECEIVES PREMIER AWARD FOR QUALITY FOR OPEN HEART SURGERY

National Award Recognizes Hospital for Coronary Bypass Graft

CLEARWATER, Fla., (June 28, 2006) - Morton Plant Mease Health Care announces that Morton Plant Hospital has received a top national recognition for its work in open heart surgery. Morton Plant was presented with the Premier Award for Quality in the area of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft. The award was presented Wed., June 21, 2006 at the 2006 Premier Annual Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition in Orlando.

"This nationally recognized award honors excellence in quality of care and operational efficiency," said Philip K. Beauchamp, president and chief executive officer of Morton Plant Mease Health Care. "It is a tribute to the constant work of our physicians, nurses and team members to maintain top standards of care."

Awarded in six clinical areas, the Premier Award for Quality is based on quality and cost data regularly submitted to Premier for reporting and benchmarking purposes. The award is distinguished by its consideration of performance-based criteria, including clinical quality outcomes, clinical process indicators and resource utilization outcomes.

"Our commitment to quality begins with a multi-disciplinary team focused on the care of our cardiac surgery patients," said Dr. Thomas Deal, cardiac surgery, Morton Plant Mease. "We measure everything and look at every aspect of patient care from pre- and post-surgery education, nutrition, pharmacy, rehabilitation and nursing care."

One of the best examples of Morton Plant's comprehensive approach is the cardiac surgery call back program. The hospital has an RN who serves as a patient education coordinator and calls patients at certain intervals following discharge from the hospital to monitor their progress. In 2005, more than 1,400 phone calls were made to patients.

This award, along with the opening of our new Morgan Heart Hospital in October 2006, means that we are always continuing to focus on providing the best possible heart care available in our community."

Morton Plant's new Morgan Heart Hospital is bringing all of the hospital's cardiac services into one center of excellence. Featuring four new computerized, voice-activated open heart surgery rooms, four cardiac catheterization labs and private patient rooms with hotel-like touches, the Morgan Heart Hospital team will provide care under the universal bed concept. As the patient's condition improves, the care changes around the patient; the patient does not move to another part of the hospital.

Clinical areas considered for the 2006 Premier Award for Quality are Hip and/or Knee Replacement Procedures, Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), Heart Failure (HF), Pneumonia (PN), Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Maternal and Neonatal Care (Pregnancy).

Three winners were picked in each category for each hospital type from an eligible pool of nearly 400 Premier hospitals. Hospitals that submitted data to Premier's Perspective (tm) clinical comparative database, the largest clinical comparative database in the nation, between October 2004 and September 2005, were eligible to receive the 2006 Premier Award for Quality. Morton Plant is one of three hospitals selected for the Coronary Artery Bypass Graft category.

This is the third time Morton Plant Mease has been honored with a Premier Award. In 2005, Mease Dunedin Hospital was selected for its work with heart failure patients and in 2004, Morton Plant Mease was noted for our Clinical Process Improvement Team, a multi-disciplinary approach developed to improve clinical care for patients.
