Morton Plant North Bay Hospital Advancing Health Care in Pasco County with Addition of New Surgeon

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla., (April 27, 2006) - Morton Plant North Bay Hospital's commitment to providing the community with the highest standard of health care is continuing with the addition of Louis I. Astra, M.D., vascular and thoracic surgeon.

"Dr. Astra's exceptional skills in surgery are a welcome addition to our surgical team," said Katherine Wicker, acting administrator and chief operating officer, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.

Dr. Astra's expertise will be utilized in many areas of medical care at Morton Plant North Bay including major chest surgery for problems with the pleura, lungs, mediastinum and esophagus as well as other less invasive approaches to diseases of the chest. Less invasive procedures result in less blood loss and a faster recovery time for the patient.

A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Astra received his undergraduate degree in chemistry and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1992. He served a categorical general surgery residency at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan and a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Astra is a member of the following professional societies: American Medical Association, American College of Cardiology, the Ohio Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons.

Established in 1965, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital is a 122-bed facility committed to improving the health of everyone it serves. Morton Plant North Bay's stroke care program has received the highest level of recognition - the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for Primary Stroke Care from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
