Morton Plant Mease Health Care Announces 1st Triathlon Event for July 16|
CLEARWATER, Fla., (March 27, 2006) - Morton Plant Mease Health Care is announcing its first Triathlon on July 16, 2006. Benefiting the Morton Plant Mease Foundation, the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon will take place at Clearwater's Sand Key Park. The race will feature a 1/3-mile open water swim, 13-mile bike through Belleair and over the Sand Key and Memorial Causeway bridges, and a flat and fast 3.1 run. A $3,000 cash prize will be offered.
"We are hoping to create an event that will grow into a national caliber race and help to raise funds for the four hospitals of Morton Plant Mease Health Care," said Bryan Stanley, chair of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation's Skip Cline Young Leadership Society, presenters of the triathlon.
To assist with planning and organizing the race, Morton Plant Mease is using the assistance of the St. Anthony's Triathlon staff. "For 23 years, St. Anthony's Health Care has organized the world-class St. Anthony's Triathlon, as well as other race events. We believe their expertise will help us create a top event," said Stanley. "We have a spectacular venue and are looking for more opportunities to provide cash prize purses for the professionals and great competition for the various age groups competing in the Triathlon."
Appearing at the Morton Plant Mease Triathlon will be Spencer Smith, three-time World Champion and two-time Ironman champion. "I am really looking forward to racing near my new home town. I expect it to be a fast and exciting race," said Smith.
The $3,000 prize purse will be distributed to the top five elite male and female finishers. Awards will be distributed five deep in the following categories: 14 years and under; 15 - 19, 20 - 20, upward in five-year increments to 85 years, 85 and above; Clydesdale; Athena; Novice; Skip Cline member; and physically challenged. Relay teams may also participate. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Entry fee is $55 for individuals and $65 for relay teams. Participants will receive a goody bag and race t-shirt. There is also a way to participate without competing in the race by volunteering to assist with registration, distribute water to athletes, assist at the finish line, or serve in a number of other important roles. Volunteers are needed July 15 and 16 and can sign up by calling 727-820-7790.
