Morton Plant Mease Creates Lung Center
01/13/2006

Team Approach to Treating Lung Disease

CLEARWATER, Fla., (December 8, 2005)- Recognizing the growing needs of patients with lung diseases for faster, more convenient care, Morton Plant Mease Health Care is announcing the formation of a lung center. Established at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, and the Morton Plant Mease Wellness Center in Palm Harbor, the Morton Plant Mease Lung Center unifies pulmonary services provided by the hospital and offers a team approach to treating lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.

"Lung cancer is one of the most devastating and deadly forms of cancer. Early diagnosis is critical to the treatment and recovery of a patient," said Tim McMahon, director of cancer services for Morton Plant Mease Health Care.

"The Morton Plant Mease Lung Center creates a central location where patients can call with questions and physicians can access patient information quickly and efficiently," said Eli Freilich, M.D., Morton Plant medical director of respiratory care services. "It's a team approach to treating lung disease that streamlines communication between respiratory therapists, specialists and patients, and saves critical time when making a diagnosis and responding with the appropriate treatment."

According to the Agency for Health Care Administration, in 2002 there were more than 51 thousand hospitalizations in Florida for COPD. In COPD, the airways - the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs - are partially obstructed, making it difficult to breathe. Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of COPD.

The Morton Plant Mease Lung Center provides convenient access to smoking cessation programs, asthma management, pulmonary rehabilitation and free screenings and assessments. The public may learn more about Lung Center services by calling (727) 461-8904.

The Morton Plant Mease Lung Center is located in the Barrett Center, 430 Pinellas Street, Clearwater, Florida on the Morton Plant campus and at the Morton Plant Mease Wellness Center, 32672 U.S. 19 N., Palm Harbor, Florida. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nationally recognized for health care excellence, Morton Plant Mease Health Care is dedicated to providing community-owned health care services that set the standard for high-quality, compassionate care. Morton Plant Mease Health Care is comprised of hospitals, outpatient and imaging centers and physician offices including these hospitals -- Morton Plant, Clearwater; Mease Dunedin, Dunedin; Mease Countryside, Safety Harbor and Morton Plant North Bay, New Port Richey.
