Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about our program:
What is the International Center for Spine Surgery?
The International Center for Spine Surgery is an innovative program created and coordinated by Canadian nurses in beautiful Dunedin, Florida. The program was designed to meet a need for patients who reside outside of the United States, but who need spine surgery in a timely manner so that they can get back to living their lives without debilitating back or neck pain. This also includes patients who are tired of relying on pain medication and those who are unable to wait for surgery in their own country.
Where is Dunedin, Florida?
Dunedin, FL, is a Gulf Coast city in the Tampa Bay area. Highlighted by its award-winning beaches, Dunedin boasts many restaurants, night clubs, golf courses and a vibrant artistic community. It is also the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays and the summer home of the Dunedin Blue Jays. Mease Dunedin Hospital, founded more than 75 years ago, is located conveniently in downtown Dunedin.
What is Mease Dunedin Hospital?
Mease Dunedin Hospital is a 134-bed hospital that is a part of BayCare Health System, one of the largest health systems in Florida. Mease Dunedin is a hometown hospital with a warm, caring and compassionate feel that is certified by the Joint Commission for Lumbar and Cervical Spine surgery. Two of Mease Dunedin’s largest specialties include spine surgery and orthopedics. In 2012, the hospital unveiled brand new surgical suites outfitted with the latest medical technology.
Isn't surgery in the U.S. expensive?
Surgery is expensive everywhere. However, having to undergo a long wait for the medical treatment you need can also be costly if it causes you to miss work and be less productive. As patients deal with longer wait times for elective surgery, an increasing number of individuals are traveling abroad for health care. At the International Center for Spine Surgery, we have condensed costs to provide you with one convenient package at one price. To discuss the various packages or pricing, call (888) 487-9754.
How quickly can I have surgery?
If you are a candidate for surgery, the procedure can be performed within two weeks of your initial phone call to the International Center for Spine Surgery. You will be asked to book your own flight to Tampa or St. Petersburg (this cost is not included in our package prices) and to notify us of your arrival date. You will be met at the airport and taken to the local accommodations you choose. Depending on the time of your arrival, all pre-op work will be done that afternoon, including an MRI, if needed. You will see the surgeon that evening for an examination, and surgery will occur the next day. If you arrive after 4:00pm, all pre-op work will be done the next day; surgery will follow that afternoon or the next morning.
How long would I be in Florida?
We would ask that you plan on staying in the area for at least three days after surgery. Your accommodations will be included in your package price. You will be seen by the surgeon before you go home and a copy of your chart will be given to you at that time. As an example, if you arrived on a Monday before 4:00pm, you could have your pre-op appointment Monday, surgery would be Tuesday and your post-op appointment would be Friday, allowing you to be back at work the following Monday.
Why would I choose this over laser spine surgery?
During minimally invasive spine surgery, the spine is visualized directly, not on a video camera, so full decompression of the nerve is possible. Though all the surgeries provided in this program are outpatient, Mease Dunedin Hospital is a highly rated hospital where you can be confident that you are receiving the best care. You will not be rushed and you may stay over night, if you would prefer. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities.
What if I don't speak English well?
We have employees in our surgical department from all over the world. Languages spoken include English, Spanish, French, Albanian, Thai, German, Polish and Greek. In addition, we do have access to an official interpreter on our language line, if necessary.
