PGY1 Pharmacy Residency - Focus in Primary Care

Mission Statement:  Develop exemplary clinical pharmacists possessing the knowledge and skills to provide high-quality, science-based, patient-centered, and cost-effective clinical pharmacy services in primary care settings.

Description:  The PGY1 pharmacy residency in primary care is designed to provide 12 consecutive months of post-graduate training. The resident will have opportunities to work with physicians and mid-level providers to promote rational prescribing of medications, work with patients to enhance their knowledge of medications, and partner with nurses and medical assistants to improve the overall safety of medication use. The resident will gain experience in many areas of pharmacy practice including the patient-centered medical home model, cardiology, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, infectious diseases, women’s health, drug information, family medicine, geriatrics, nutrition, and pharmacy administration. The primary site is the Turley Family Health Center, an outpatient primary care center located in Clearwater, Florida. It is affiliated with Morton Plant Mease Hospitals and the University of South Florida. Services include multidisciplinary family medicine clinics and pharmacist-managed disease state management clinics. There will be opportunities for writing and speaking, medication use evaluation, formulary management, and medication distribution. Completion of a research project is required.

Research Project:   A research project is a requirement of the program and is to be presented at the Florida Residency Conference. Ongoing written and oral results will be evaluated with the final results presented in publishable quality.

Requirements for Acceptance:

  • Completed applications are to be submitted at PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service) and are to include:
    o    A discussion of your professional goals and objectives and your reason for pursuing a residency.
          Also include the areas of pharmacy in which you are most and least interested.
    o    Current Curriculum Vitae
    o    Three letters of recommendation using the forms provided in PhORCAS  
    o    Official transcript from all colleges of pharmacy attended
  • The applicant must participate in the Match process
  • The applicant must possess a Pharm.D. degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy
  • The applicant must be a citizen of the United States
  • All residents must successfully complete the Florida state board examination within the first 45 days of the program
