Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center

The Right Answers. Right Away.
"You came to this page because you have a lot of questions and we're going to do our best to answer them quickly, honestly, and with the compassion that we feel every woman deserves. What you need to know first is that your doctor has recommended you go to what is unequivocally the most comprehensive, best-staffed, best-equipped facility of its kind in the area. In fact, it's the only one. As its medical director, it's my sincere hope that this will help allay some of your concerns. And it's my commitment that you receive the most accurate answers in the shortest possible time frame, all in the company of women and men who, like me, have dedicated themselves to women like you."

Barbara Bourland, M.D.

What's Next?

You will be scheduled (either through your physician or by calling yourself) for more comprehensive tests that will determine the exact nature of your condition. These may include a clinical breast examination, high-resolution ultrasound, diagnostic mammogram, or, in some cases, a non-surgical breast biopsy.

How Long Will It Be Before I Get My Answers?

Most results are given on the same day - in fact, we'll discuss them with you even before you leave. Biopsy results are communicated to both you and your physician, usually within 24 hours. Non-surgical biopsies have proven to be just as accurate as surgical biopsies, but without the scarring and recovery time.

How Will I Know It's The Right Answer?

Every physician at the center is board certified. Every nurse and technologist is a specialist in breast health. And every piece of diagnostic equipment is the best of its kind. We employ a CAD system that converts conventional mammogram film into digital files for detailed computer analysis, a process proven to reduce false negative rates by 20%.

What Happens After I Get My Results?

In most cases, you'll learn that everything's fine. Should treatment be indicated, it's comforting to know you are within the Morton Plant Mease system, with its superb cancer program and unsurpassed oncologists. Our current affiliation with the Moffitt Cancer Center has greatly expanded the options available to our patients. And our Powell Cancer Center houses CaPSS, a support program that provides our patients and their families with access to the counselors and support groups they need.

What Will The Environment Be Like?

Low lighting, soft music, greenery and trickling fountains evoke feelings of an English garden. The work areas are out of view and every effort is made to make every patient as comfortable as possible.

How Did We Get Our Name?

The center exists because of donations from our community and a generous gift from Carroll and Mabel Cheek who lost their daughter Susan to breast cancer. We're proud to help carry out Susan's work in promoting breast cancer awareness and early detection.
